Tiki Caliente 7: Back to the Tropics

Pages: 1 2 66 replies

The soft, warm breeze carries the sound of rustling palms and sensuous exotica music to your ears. Before you, your glass, filled with a fine rum libation, clinks together with new friends. Heartfelt calls of “Aloha” awaken in you a long-buried memory of primitive excitement. This has been your dream. Are you on some far-off tropical island? Yes… and it’s called Tiki Caliente.

Tiki Caliente is an annual event that creates the aura of island living, but transports it to Palm Springs, California. It brings together the best music, art, cocktails and people to create a celebration dedicated to Tiki culture. Tiki Caliente touches all of your senses. It’s a combination of sights, sounds, scents and tastes, all in one memorable weekend. From music to art, shopping and socializing, Tiki Caliente will immerse you into the colorful and escapist Polynesian-Pop world. And, since the Tiki culture is partially focused on crafted cocktails, this gathering will also entice you repeatedly with a variety of concoctions made with exotic rums, juices and spices. From our host’s personal creations, to the cocktails made especially for the various on-site room parties, your palate will be enlightened.

Every year, Tiki Caliente features some of the greatest live entertainment in the Tiki scene, on our main stage and in our late-night lounge shows. In between the live performances, our DJs will be spinning vinyl, so the air is always filled with well-themed music. If shopping is your thing, the hotel grounds are filled with vendors selling tropical everything. Vintage aloha wear, new Tiki-inspired art, Tiki mugs, trinkets and other fine baubles are plentiful, so you can take home your own personal souvenir of paradise.

What kind of people are right for Tiki Caliente? Here’s a quote that we feel fits perfectly:

“Dedicated to those merry souls who make eating and drinking a pleasure, who achieve contentedness long before capacity, and who, whenever they drink prove able to carry it, enjoy it, and remain gentlemen.” — Trader Vic

If this sounds like you, and you enjoy healthy escapism and true aloha spirit, then join us at Tiki Caliente. We want people to participate in our party and be part of this wondrous scene. The Tiki community is extremely friendly and welcoming. We enjoy seeing new people become old friends. And to keep the spirit of this event lively but not overbearing, we limit ticket sales to only six hundred people. We don’t want to be the biggest, only the best — and for that we need people like you to be part of this.

Tiki Caliente is open to the general public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. After that, it is a event only for guests who have purchased wristbands, who will be able to enjoy the headlining live entertainment, room parties and other activities. The entire hotel has been purchased for this weekend, and the grounds are secured starting at 7 p.m.

“Mahalo” and we look forward to entertaining you.

Warning/Awesome Monkey release.
Peep's of Caliente this is a 3 day warning to purchase your official event mug before the price increases on February 10th. We will increase the price and only allow another 20 mugs to sell before we stop pre-sales to save some for on-ground event sales.
Get yours at http://www.tiki-caliente.com
As a reminder of how limited these mugs are and how collectable they will become I am releasing my last Tiki Caliente 6 monkey mug into the wild with a low reserve. This is number #3 of the long SOLD OUT mug. Good luck catching this monkey if you don't have one already.

Tiki Caliente 7: rum symposium (Limited Space so move fast)
Saturday (May 15th at 2p.m.) (Only 50 people)
Tickets at: http://tiki-caliente.com/info/
Description:
If you’ve ever glanced at a vintage Donn Beach cocktail recipe, you know of rum’s importance in tropical cocktails. Heck, Don’s vaunted rum rhapsodies depend on having a variety of the stuff on hand. So what gives – what’s with all those different types of rums anyway?
Come discover – and taste – the basics about rum and its 3 primary styles: Spanish, French, and English. Then learn how to deploy those styles, alone and together, into classic cocktails as we dig into the Navy Grog.
Bio:
Kevin Upthegrove is the host of the 5 Minutes of Rum podcast, an occasional freelance writer and speaker, and a full-time cocktail nerd. He’s previously given talks on the Mai Tai and on native Hawaiian rums at Tonga Hut North Hollywood’s Rum Rhum Club. If you’ve been to Tiki Oasis, Tiki Caliente, Mojave Oasis, Taboo, or the
Tonga Hut you’ve quite possibly already enjoyed one of his rum-based creation. http://5minutesofrum.com

Panicking, or celebrating? How many people were there with me for TC 2, the last one held at the Tropics, when it was 115 during the day...that was brutal!

It looks like it's going to be a spectacular weekend, see you all there!

B

My heat detesting boyfriend & dog are celebrating ! I on the other hand am panicking !

Since it was 110 degrees during last years Caliente
I would not mind a cooler year.

The current forecast I see for next Saturday is 78 and sunny. I think I can get behind that sort of weather.

Mojave Oasis has great weather this year...maybe it's a trend?

Kevin

I'll just put this here for reference. Also because it's really cool.

Kevin

Almost time....

:)

Once more, with feeling (ok, mostly because the page turned and I think people should have a good look at the poster):

Had a great time......thanks Rory!

What a great weekend. It was great to be back at the Caliente Tropics. The new additions look great and it just felt right. The bands, the crawl hosts (+ ZTL for organizing), the vendors, the art, and the people - good stuff all around. Even the weather cooperated. Special thank you to those that came to the rum symposium - it was a thrill for me to be able to present a class in the Tropics itself.

The weekend went by so quickly. Thanks for putting Tiki Caliente together Rory; I'm looking forward to more.

I'm leaving out a bunch of fine folks to thank, so my apologies for that. I've spent a few hours editing photos, so I'm gonna let the pictures do the talking.

kevin

First up, Thursday night's Fluff art show, plus a couple of assorted shots from the Caliente Tropics.

Higher resolution versions are up on Flickr.

Next up, Friday afternoon's unveiling of the new Bosko shields (these are freaking incredible), plus the room party kickoff with the Mulders. I have some more photos of Bosko's art later and eventually will post them to the Caliente Tropics thread. Walking around with Bosko and the Tiki Caliente attendees watching the new shields be unveiled was one of my favorite Caliente memories of any Tiki Caliente.
