On this week’s show we are celebrated the birthdays of just a bit more than a minion of the fine musical artists who joined us on this earth in the outstanding month of August.

  1. “Kaimana Hila (Diamond Head)” by our Birthday Boy Andy Cummings & The Hawaiian Serenaders, including Gabby Pahiniui on Backing Vocal and Guitar, recorded in the late 1940’s and found on the anthemic anthology: Vintage Hawaiian Treasures, Volume Six – Night Club Hula Hawaiian Style – Bell Records Recordings.

  2. “Hu’i E” sung by our Birthday Girl Raiatea Helm on her sunlit CD: Raiatea – Sweet & Lovely.

  3. “Radio Hula” by our August Natal Notable Ledward Kaapana & Friends from the combustive compilation: Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Collection (Volume 2), featuring Paul Bergeson on Guitar, Vikto Krauss on Upright Bass, Tom Roady on Percussion, and Jody Miskulin on Accordion.

  4. The Kui Lee composition: “Lahaina Luna” sung by our Birthday Boy Don Ho and his band in 1966 for his electric LP: Don Ho Again!

  5. “Symphonic Raps,” written by Maurice Abrahams and drawn from the historical document: Louis Armstrong, Volume 4: Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines, recorded in 1928 by our Birthday Boy Armstrong on Trumpet and Earl Hines on Piano, with Carroll Dickerson’s Savoyagers, who were Carroll Dickerson on Violin, Homer Hobson on Trumpet, Fred Robinson on Trombone, Bert Curry and Crawford Wethington on Alto Saxes, Jimmy Strong on Clarinet and Tenor Sax, Mancy Carr on Banjo, Pete Briggs on Tuba and Zutty Singleton on Drums. Throughout his life Louis Armstrong told people he was born on the Fourth of July but in fact his real birthday was August 4, 1901.

  6. The Bix Beiderbecke tune “Candlelights,” performed in 1939 by our Birthday Boy Jess Stacy on unaccompanied Piano and found on the righteous retrospective: Bix Beiderbecke – In a Mist.

  7. “Keepin' Out of Mischief Now,” composed by Fats Waller and sung by Maxine Sullivan & Her All-Stars on her 1956 tributory LP: Memories of You -- A Tribute to Andy Razaf, the song’s lyricist. She is ably supported by our August Birthday Celebrant Charlie Shavers on Trumpet, with Buster Bailey on Clarinet, Hilton Jefferson on Alto Sax, Dick Hyman on Piano, Milt Hinton on Bass and Louis Burnam on Drums.

  8. “Night and Day,” which originally debuted in the 1932 Broadway musical: The Gay Divorcee, performed by the alto sax legend and our Natal Notable Charlie Parker on his 1952 outstanding album: Cole Porter Songbook, with another August Birthday Baby Oscar Peterson on Piano, as well as Bill Harris on Trombone, Bernie Privin on Trumpet, Freddie Green on Electric Guitar, Ray Brown on Bass and Don Lamond on Drums.

  9. “I Told Ya I Love Ya, Now Get Out,” composed by our Birthday Boys Benny Carter and Herb Ellis, sung in 1947 by Anita O’Day with Will Bradley & His Orchestra, featuring Stan Freeman on Piano, taken from the bodacious Box Set: Young Anita.

  10. “Blue Lou,” composed by our Birthday Celebrant Edgar Sampson, performed by trumpeter Jonah Jones and his quartet on their 1959 LP: I Dig Chicks, with Teddy Brannon on Piano, John Brown on Bass and George 'Pops' Foster on Drums.

  11. “Stella by Starlight,” the classic inked by two of our August Birthday Boys Victor Young and Ned Washington for the 1944 movie: The Uninvited, recorded in 1961 by their fellow Birthday Boy Tony Bennett and found on his reticulated retrospective simply titled: Jazz.

  12. “Dickie's Dream” waxed in 1939 by the Kansas City Seven, including our August Natal Notable Lester Young on Tenor Sax, Dickie Wells on Trombone, Buck Clayton on Trumpet and fellow Birthday Celebrant Count Basie on Piano, found on the reliquarious retrospective: Buck Clayton: Swingin’ With Buck.

  13. “I Remember Clifford,” composed by Jon Hendricks and Benny Golson, waxed by our Birthday Girl Dinah Washington in 1957 and found on her clamorous collection: Compact Jazz.

  14. The Paul Horn composition “The Four Winds Blow” from our Birthday Boy’s 1958 labial LP: Buddy Collette’s Swinging Shepherds, with Mr. Collette on Flute joined by Bud Shank, Paul Horn and Harry Klee also on Flutes, and Bill Miller on Piano, Joe Comfort on Bass and Bill Richmond on Drums.

  15. “'Round Midnight,” written by Thelonious Monk and Bernie Hanighen and sung by our August Birthday Boy Buddy Greco on his 1962 ambitious album: Body & Soul, arranged and conducted by Robert Mersey.

  16. “Nightingale,” composed by Xavier Cugat, George Rosner and Fred Wise and sung by our August Birthday Celebrant Ethel Azama on her 1958 luxurious LP: Exotic Dreams accompanied by the arranger Paul Conrad on Piano. Ms. Azama started her professional career in 1955 as an emcee at the Oasis nightclub in Honolulu, Martin Denny discovered her and persuaded Liberty Records to have her make this album.
