I recently bought two Solomon Island Nguzu Nguzu from a local collector. I'm keeping one and have offered the other for sale on ebay.

This item is a traditional carved figurehead usually strapped to the prow of a war canoe at the waterline to ward off evil by Kesoko, the water fiend, who would attempt to upset a canoe and devour the crew.

The Nguzu Nguzu is a dog-like creature usually depicted clutching a fish or some other animal, and sometimes clutching a head - as this one is. The Solomon Islanders were sometimes headhunters so the intention of this one is clear. These are usually carved from a local hardwood and decorated with mother of pearl. This one is particularly well decorated with mother of pearl teeth and other detail. It is said to date from the pre 1960s.
