Thoughts On Trader Vic's Original Drinks that Don't Use Rum

Pages: 1 4 replies

Hey all, just joined. The non-profit I work for is putting on a benefit cocktail party. Last year it was Mid-Century Modern themed, this year I got my way and it's Tiki.

We do three drinks and have already settled on the Zombie and the Missionary's Downfall. What I need are ideas of an Original Trader Vic's drink that is tasty, appeals to wide variety of pallets and isn't so run forward, or maybe doesn't event contain rum.

We tried out the Fog Cutter, which our tasting panel didn't care for, and we did the Mai Tai last year, so that' out.

I really want to have drinks by the two titans of Tiki and I haven't been able to find something that would work, again, preferably without rum.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I've looked through all my books but just can't seem to figure this one out.

Thanks

A

Of Trader Vic's drinks, maybe try the Peachtree Punch -- signature cocktail of the Atlanta TV.

One cocktail that I find has a lot of fans but doesn't get a lot of attention is the Lapu Lapu. No one seems to know who originated the drink, although it appears on a lot of mid-century tiki bar menus. Here's one recipe, although I make it a bit differently: https://ultimatemaitai.com/2024/03/02/make-drink-lapu-lapu/

I've made the Chief Lapu Lapu a few times off of the Total Tiki app recipe and I never got the appeal of this one. It's cloyingly sweet and it just didn't land for me. To each their own, I suppose.

Suffering bastard 1942.
