I posted a reference to this in another thread, but it occurs to me that may be interesting enough to merit its own topic:

2 men, a dog, and the 1st car road trip - story at CNN.com

Horatio's Drive - website at PBS.org

It's airing on PBS tonight (but not in HD, harumph). I may need to tape a photo of Bud to my dashboard.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this trip, an Indiana orthodontist made the same trip in the same type of car last summer:

I happened to catch the show by chance last night - Bud is the best! I love the fact that he got his own goggles.

This was a great show - catch it if it's on again. Oh, wait - it's PBS, of COURSE it will be on again.

Seriously, it really puts modern road trips into perspective when they recount how they had to pull their car out of the Nebraska mud 18 times in one day (with a manual block & tackle). No wimps, they.

But now I have that stupid song in my head...

"He had to get under, get out and get under...."

now i want to do the lincoln highway roadtrip almost as much, if not more than route 66.

Unfortunately, like Route 66, much of the old Lincoln highway has been obliterated by Interstate 80. In some states some of it still exists as Route 30.

There are many old highway routes that are almost completely intact still because they are far enough from an interstate that they are still used as major arteries. They typically have more older non-chain motels, restaurants, and roadside attractions than along the interstate. Even if an old highway (such as 66 or 30) still exists next to the interstate that replaced it I have found that older establishments get driven out of business by the big chains that cluster along the interstate nearby.

Some of the old highways almost completely intact from coast to coast are US20 and US50. From Canada to Mexico there are many: US95 (which goes right through Las Vegas), US395, US89, and US83. Then there's US1 along the East coast. I did large portions of US20, US50, and US89 on my recent road trip. But I want to drive them all!
