I've finally got the software up and running for the Tiki Gallery. I'll be adding lots of tiki stuff in the coming weeks, but if you have mugs, artwork, anything tiki, please help build the gallery! You can upload any pics you have and add descriptions/comments/info on anything in the gallery. Help us build a huge gallery of everything that's out there!!

M

I have submitted some shots from my collection, a few of my more "rare" items. The problem is I usually only have single shots of mugs I planned to sell, most of my collection is photographed en masse.

Will be getting my own digital camera soon and can take single shots of all my stuff worthy of submission. The database is a great idea. However, it will be bad news for my collecting. Seeing all the mugs out there will lead me to more and more collecting binges. Like that Kelbo's mug.

My Tiki Mugs

You can use any of the pictures off mysite but I am told the only rare one is the tiki bob's :P

NICE! It is so great to, after all these years, still find mugs/items I have NEVER seen before...like that Trader Dick's Rum Barrel, or the Islander skull mug!
I think the Islander in Stockton had the absolutely coolest line of mugs ever. I have yet to see a photo of that place...

And the "Best Lei in Hawaii" ashtray! Wowie Zowie! I just wanna shrink down and take a bath in that tray! Can I photograph it somehow for my book?

DZ

Nice collection! I am still a 'novice' collector (80+ different pieces), but I was glad to see many mugs from my own collection pictured. I do have quite a few that I didn't see, but I'll wait until you've got the rest of your collection put up before submitting any pix of mine. :)

Actually, CC Rider has one that has all the original paint intact. His was the first that I saw and I like it better than mine. Email him about taking a pic of it for your book...otherwise, I'd be glad to offer mine.

Glad you all like the gallery...I'm having a ton of fun with it...but I'm just about out of pics to post, so put yours up anytime!

M

Great stuff Mike, but it makes collecting so much more difficult when one sees what is still out there to hunt and gather. My list of "must haves" just keeps growing...

Hope more folks contribute their photos, or do I?

Cheers,
midnite

Mattio,
I saw your Trader Pang's mug there. The only real Tiki mug I have so far is a Trader Pang's Moai mug! I'll try to post a pic later.

-Patrick

Okay, I posted a couple of pics to the Gallery:

Thanks! This is a very cool setup, easy to upload to, fun to browse.

T

The gallery is up to 278 photos so far!! Thanks to TikiRob for posting some great photos of his Shag and other Tiki Farm mugs!
And try the Slideshow link in each gallery...it's kinds fun to play with.

I added a few more, do not blame me for my weak photos, blame my Dad. He could never take a decent photo and I got his talent! Still have a few more to add, and more still to photograph alone for submission.

Gallery is shaping up nicely...lots of good stuff.

T

Hello all-

I've added some from my collection, mostly Munktikis and the Shag 2nd edition, along with a few other unusual ones for fun.

Hats off to Tiki Hula for the initiative and hard work to get the Gallery going! Nice work!!!

T

Thanks for all the great photo additions to the gallery: Shag mugs, Munktiki, and all the rest! This gallery thing is really fun!

I hadn't seen the kelvins salt & pepper set before- what a score!

S

Great idea for the gallery, Mike!

So many things I have not seen and given your impressive collection, I was just glad I could contribute!

I got those Kelvin's shakers before I even knew what I was doing! I just thought they were very cool looking and the next thing you know, here they are in the Gallery! I guess that's what it's all about.

Many mahalos for your efforts on this!

Aloha,

Uncle Arty

M

Yep, those Kelvin's S/P are too cool. I am still trying to get the mug. No luck!

BTW, I am going to be selling a bunch of mugs (dupes and such) from my collection. Technology willing, having a few PC problems, so if anyone is intersted send me an email. I am going to send out an email offering the stuff to Tiki Centralites first. Anyone will be able to snatch them for my "buy now" or reserve prices before I list them on ebay.

Off to Vegas for a few days, if anyone wants a look-see email me at:

[email protected]

Michelle

M

Do you wish to contribute to the Tiki Gallery, but don't have the "just right" mug to submit? Is your collection not ready for Summer, or prime-time, or even a look-see by the neighbors? Fear not my fellow Tiki Centralites for here's a smorgasbord of highest quality Tiki mugs, ready to make your life that much more enriched. Plus, they are low calorie...and make you better-looking.

http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=cpt.midnite&completed=0&sort=3&since=-1&include=0&page=1&rows=25

Ok, the low calorie part is puffery.

Shameless promotion: over!
midnite

ps They dice too. And there's a chance they'll give you those washboard ab's you've been wanting!

WOW! Who ever thought this Internet thing could be so cool. Here I thought I could only look at porn on this thing!

Thanks for the gallery & all the photographic contributions. One of these days I'll throw some of my own in.

QUESTION: Does anyone know the origin of #6 in Marked Mugs & Bowls? This is Midnite Tiki's Trader Vic find.
I have one found by my brother out in Buttmunch, Kansas somewhere that is very similar to this but just tan in color and more bamboo-ie with two other 'embossed' naked hula girls on them.
Anyone know if the TV and mine are related somehow? I kind of doubt it, because tehre are no markings on mine. But there are so many molds that are similar or sold and whatever.
Just curious.
Thanks again.
-C.

That barrel mug she posted is actually from Trader Dick's, a restaurant/bar in the Nugget Casino in Sparks, Nevada. I've not seen it anywhere else, or even any other versions of it- maybe someone else has?

Glad you like the gallery- I'll be adding lots more in the next couple days.

T

I just added a bunch of neat stuff to the galleries: many vintage menus from Trader Vic's, the Lanai, Mai Kai, Kona Kai, Kahiki, and more. In the Everything Else Gallery check out the pics from a 1964 magazine article on the Girls of the Mai Kai....they have nice, big....drinks... :)

T

Amazing images! "The Mai Kai girls keep in shape by tossing leis around while frolicking in the fountain". What a way to keep in shape!

Re: Everything Else # 69 (hmmm...)

QUOTE:
*** Another page from the 1964 Argosy magazine article on the Mai Kai Girls. The captions read, "If you give them a week's notice, the Mai Kai will set up an outdoor luau for about twenty dollars a person." and "Co-owner Bob Thornton checks waitresses regularly for costume fit, weight and good grooming." ***

My 2 cents:
Bob Thornton obviously found favor with God.

M

If there are any Kahiki-know-it-alls out there do check out the set of S/P shakers I recently posted on the Tiki Gallery. They look a bit different than the commonly seen set made by OMC. I am guessing they were and earlier version used at Kahiki. Just not sure..they're green but a bit more undefined and primitive looking than the usual suspects.

Anyone....anyone?

One more day of my Tiki mug sale, a few items left. Check it out, 100% of the proceeds go to the "midnite trip to Boston fund"...we need the dues, man.

http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=cpt.midnite&completed=0&sort=3&since=-1&include=0&page=1&rows=25

midnite

Midnite, while I do not think of myself as a "Kahiki-Know-It-All", I am pretty knowledgeable.
But before I make a fool out of myself (that never seems too hard), I'm going to find old RetroRick - the Kahiki Guru and see what he says. Havent talked to him in months!

We all know Hoffman did some of their stuff in the earlier days, but most of those are appropriately marked. Same goes with Sterling China.
I've heard that they made their own mugs at one time but I think they were limited only to the mugs - possibly ashtrays, but I don't think anything else like S&P shakers.

I'd be curious just to find out.

I'll let you know what we find.

-C.

M

Oh yeah, Retrorick...he may know. I had forgotten about him, have not seen his auctions on ebay for some time now. He may know, yep.

I don't think they were made by Hoffman, but I als don't think they are OMC product. Just as I got this pair I see a set on ebay now...my luck!

Thanks, appreciate the assistance.

M

I just submitted my newst "best" item to the gallery. It's a big drink of water, ha ha, drink of water..get it? I did a pun.

http://www.tikiroom.net/gallery/marked/aer

Have emailed Mai-Kai about it, and one employee believes he recalls the mug was used at Mai-Kai, but not the drink(s). It is an amazing piece. I got lucky to score this item.

Finally got around to posting a few pics, including the infamous Ren Clark headhunter mug.
I figured I should get some pictures up soon or I wont have anything different to add that hasn't shown up already!

It was really quick & easy to load pics too!

BBTD,
Ewww, there it is: the ever so desired, but repulsive, Ren Clark Polynesian Village "I lost my head" Mug! That thing should be part of the treatnment at AA, seeing it for too long could stop me drinking.

It's ugly as heck, but I still want one. Hmm, how about a trade? I have these very rare (so I am told) Tiki "Leilani" mugs. They are supposed to be the ultra cool mug to collect, saw something on A&E about this. I could even offer you TWO of these rarities.

Plus, some Taboo Cove drink stirrers. And this chair, and the cupcake from my lunch.

Deal?

midnite

hmm, tempting offer.
what kind of cupcake?

since I am enjoying such extremely lean times AND my computer is taking a major dump, I cant help but wonder what 'ol ren would actually fetch on ebay.

it's only 'stuff', right?

I think I might hate myself in the morning...

M

I cant help but wonder what 'ol ren would actually fetch on ebay.
...

My sense on such a momentus listing? Somewhere between a TV "Sufferin' B" and the Kahiki Mystery Bowl.

A lot of bones indeed.

midnite

First, thanks to all you guys who've added mugs and stuff to the gallery! There are almost 400 pics now and still growing! Very cool!

An addition I added yesterday was a little java pre-slideshow to the opening page:
http://www.tikiroom.net/database.html
Check it out sometime- and I'll add even more pics to it later.

And BBTD- DO NOT sell that Ren Clark mug!! BTW, are you going to be at Martin and Rebecca's party ont the 21st? Maybe you could bring it along for a little show-and-tell? I'd love to actually hold it and see it up close!!

And BBTD- DO NOT sell that Ren Clark mug!! BTW, are you going to be at Martin and Rebecca's party ont the 21st? Maybe you could bring it along for a little show-and-tell? I'd love to actually hold it and see it up close!!

hey Mike-
my computer officially blew out so I have to use my roomates' until I get the pig fixed.

naah, I dont really want to sell Ren (I'm still looking for his big nosed native pal), but I am curious how much it would sell for now that the book of tiki came out & all the rarer mugs are starting to bring in big money on ebay.
it looks good so far for the 21st
as far as bringing the mug along so that people who are enjoying strong drinks can handle it? I'm pretty sure thats how tragedy strikes & urban legends are born...
I'll have to look for my shatterproof briefcase & handcuffs & let ya know. (ok, I already know where the handcuffs are)

M

(I'm still looking for his big nosed native pal)

So, what does that mug look like? I have one mug from Ren's, it's a sweet island girl (pic is on Mike's site) and once heard of the "native" guy mug from Ren's through another collector.

Does it look like the Tepco crazy native mug? Used at TV's I believe?

Curious in San Fran,
midnite

actually, it is shaped a bit more like the green westwood pedestal mug. It has a handle in the back but it is brown with a huge nose with a goofy comical look to it.
I love the sexy hula girl mug, but havent found one at a price I can live with yet.
**also check the other thread about ren clark's, there is a bit of info you might benefit from.

Hey, I enjoy bringing stuff for people to see- I brought the Kahiki Mystery Bowl to the Palm Springs party for people to see, and I'll bring it next weekend too- 'cause I know at least Michelle wants to see it. If everyone is careful then there's no huge danger. I don't blame you if you'd rather not though- because there is always some level of risk involved....

Lookin' forward to meeting you and everyone else next weekend!

M

Do I need to set up some kind of museum room this weekend? :)

Sounds great- thanks to all for sharing your goodies with us. Everyone: be careful!

-martin

T

Just hire a few security guards and we'll be ok :)

Thanks in advance for throwing the party!

M

My latest addition to the gallery:

http://www.tikiroom.net/gallery/misc/adq

It's the black velvet rendering of the Mai-Kai, as seen in BOT. Not really the Mai-Kai, as Sven has explained, but it is pretty neat.

Find something nice for the gallery, or for the holidays (only 64 shopping days left) at the Midnite Tiki Mug Sale:

http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=cpt.midnite&completed=0&sort=3&since=-1&include=0&page=1&rows=25

There's some good stuff available, it's not all crap!

I just added an album in the gallery for postcards, menus, and any other paper items!!

There are almost 500 photos in the gallery now- Mahalo to everyone who's contributed!!

...and more cool changes & additions are on the way...

I just got this mug as a housewarming gift. The color is washed out in the picture, though. In reality it's brilliantly flourescent orange! shudder

Ok, I gots me a new digital camera and I am learning the ropes. Should be able to load much more of my collection now...knock on wood. Here's a few I did his morning:

http://www.tikiroom.net/database2.html

I also entered an old Johnny Sens mug and the Crazy Native from Trader Vic's. Check 'em out!

Plus, don't forget my Midnite October Mug Sale, many things on the block that are part of the Tiki Gallery. See, I tied my unscrupulous pander to the topic. More to come this week as well.

http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=cpt.midnite&completed=0&sort=3&since=-1&include=0&page=1&rows=25

AND...GO GIANTS! No connection there.

M

Submitted a few more items today. Not sure if they are duplicates ther are so many items in the gallery now, hard to keep track. Some neat stuff: Luau 400, Beachcomber New Orleans, and more!

I like the new animation at the gallery.

http://www.tradervic.com/

midnite :drink:

Thanks for adding mugs Midnite! And I go through every once in awhile and look for duplicate pics.....

More flash animation to come!

Here is a posting for Gecko!

*hey Suga!
I want to start a post on what ever section you think it should go in...If anyone has a picture of a rare mug or something about the culture they would like to share with the group would be cool to see pics of rare items.

Here's mine. It's a name plate that use to be on the back of Don The Beachcombers boat called "the beachcomber". If Sven has any idea of what the boat looked like or anything about it would be cool. I know he had a few boats so??? The story is when he sold the boat the guy that bought it had it redone and threw away just about everything except for this?? That's the story that I got from the guy I bought it from. I don't know anything else.
Mahalo
Gecko-*

I've never seen one of these plates. I placed it in the Tiki Gallery with other Don The Beachcomber items.

See the boat name plate here:

http://www.tikiroom.net/gallery/search.php?searchstring=Don+The+Beachcomber

T

That's really cool- what a great piece of tiki bar history!!

Along with all the postcards and stuff I've posted recently, the gallery is up to over 600 photos!!

http://www.tikiroom.net/database.html

M

I enjoyed all the new postacrds and menus. Really like the cocktail menus, they're a good source of info regarding what drink was served in a particular mug.

Some of the postcards are fantastic. Nice interior shots of places we'll never be able to see again. You collection is getting up there, quite a valuable resource.

It's the Library of Tiki!

midnite :drink:

Thank you, thank you...

I even hit a postcard show yesterday and got some more rare pc's that I'll post later this week!!

This is too much fun!!
