Witco question for BigBro

Pages: 1 1 replies

M

I've seen a couple of pieces in thrift/antique stores that look like they might be Witco, but have no identifying marks. What should I be looking for- a stamp or sticker on the back of a wall hanging for instance? Thanks for the help, oh Oracle Of Witco

Look for that wide grain swamp cedar wood. Looks like black veins that stand out. And the the pieces were rarely geometric machine looking, more modern abstract.
Sometimes you find a little "Witco-Where decor becomes art" card stapled on the back of it, but that's rare. A lot of the "paintings" (wood on framed fabric background) were signed "Wilrongo", an anagram formed from William Westenhaver, Ronald Hovde, and Gordon Robb, the three main guys at Witco.
They come in all kinds of styles, Tiki, Coonquistador, Modern, Animals, Asian, Viking....
