Question about art copyrights....

This may sound like a stupid question, but I was wondering: If you OWN an original piece of art (say a SHAG for example), does that give you the right to reproduce the image on other products for a profit? Could you issue your own lithos if you own the original?

Just wondering.

Nope.
It's not who owns the print, it's who owns the original idea for the print, i.e. the intellectual property. And that would be SHAG.

(IP) The ownership of ideas and control over the tangible or virtual representation of those ideas.
Use of another person's intellectual property may or may not involve royalty payments or
permission, but should always include proper credit to the source.

Purple Jade is quite right... you may own the piece, but Shag (or the original creator) still owns the copyright unless it was specifically part of the purchase-- and in that case, the artwork would be much more expensive, and you'd have a lengthy contract with the artist.

Occasionally, if you buy something original, anonymous, and old, you effectively become the copyright owner, but that's not going to help you much with identifiable current work… that’s more useful if you buy old photographs and use ‘em in current projects (which Tikitronic has done in the past).

There was a discussion on the main board a while ago about copyrights, if you’re interested…
