This may sound like a stupid question, but I was wondering: If you OWN an original piece of art (say a SHAG for example), does that give you the right to reproduce the image on other products for a profit? Could you issue your own lithos if you own the original? Just wondering. |

Nope. (IP) The ownership of ideas and control over the tangible or virtual representation of those ideas. |

Purple Jade is quite right... you may own the piece, but Shag (or the original creator) still owns the copyright unless it was specifically part of the purchase-- and in that case, the artwork would be much more expensive, and you'd have a lengthy contract with the artist. Occasionally, if you buy something original, anonymous, and old, you effectively become the copyright owner, but that's not going to help you much with identifiable current work… that’s more useful if you buy old photographs and use ‘em in current projects (which Tikitronic has done in the past). There was a discussion on the main board a while ago about copyrights, if you’re interested… [ Edited by: Kim on 2003-11-30 17:36 ] |
