Questions about SF Tiki Crawl IV

Tiki Emi & I are strongly considering coming out to this event.

We were wondering if anyone could recommend a decent place to stay or suggest which part of town is best for the crawl.

What's scheduled for Thursday April 1?
What's scheduled for Sunday?

Any other suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

Last year we stayed at the Cow Hollow Inn, it's clean and close to the Foggy Grotto.

When is this year's crawl? I know it's in April... but what date?

I'm on the caravan list, too, with room for one more in my zippy little convertible. Lemme know which hotel is going to be Hoiti Toiti HQ!

I know a few people who have stayed at the Mosser. It is classy and CHEAP and near Union Square. I took at tour when I was in the neighborhood once-VERY VERY Clean with a feeling of being in a very classy/expensive hotel. The rooms can be small and some share a bathroom down the hall, but if you want opulence on a budget-I recommend this place. It is on Fourth near Market St. accross from the Marriott Hotel.

We are still finalizing many details about the weekend, but it's coming together beautifully.

I can say that Sunday will be low key and likely only involve an afternoon event.

Thursday will hopefully be bigger than last year, but retain a "pre-party" vibe. Cool places will be visited. (At least I think so :wink: )

Although the main crawl is on Saturday, Friday will be damn near as big and we need to see a LOT of people out that night, too.

And we are working on a block of rooms at a discounted rate.

For those flying, you may wish to look into Oakland International.

I've stayed at the Mosser a few times.... and I'll definitely be back! Great old restored building, ultra modern rooms.... nicest hotel you can get for cheap in the area!

When I stayed there, I opted for a room with a private bath and ended up getting one with a kitchenette as well!

I'm pondering on going to the S.F.T.C. as well....

OK- here's the story:

Forget about the airport and the Fisherman's Wharf locations.

Your best bet is probably going to be the Hyatt Regency. It's the nicest of the three- great architecture with a stunning indoor atrium.

The Regency will also put you at the foot of the California St. Cable Car Line- the original Cable Car to the stars. There is no better way to walk out of your hotel, and take the Cable Car straight to the Tonga Room at the top of Nob Hill.

The Park Hyatt is a more business hotel, located close to the car as well, and would be fine. The Grand Hyatt has the advantage of being walkable to The Tonga Room (steep hill!) and a block from the 38 Geary Bus line which will take you to both The Foggy Grotto and Trad'r Sam's. Though you can easily get to the 38 bus from any of the three hotels.

That's a great job perk by the way.

I'm jumping the gun a little bit- this will soon be posted on the Official SF Tiki Crawl Website, but I wanted people to get a heads up:

For those of you interested in staying at the Mosser in SF- I was unable to guarantee a block of rooms for very long, and the rates were only so-so. There should still be some availability, and some lower cost shared-bathroom rooms as well. Suggest if you are interested in staying there that you book your room as soon as possible (http://www.themosser.com/). But read the rest of this first....

The Crawl is a four day affair. Thursday is a pre-party which everyone is encouraged to attend. Sunday is a day to relax and decompress at a favorite local tiki hangout. But Friday and Saturday are full on Crawl Goodness. Friday will be in the East Bay. If you stay at the Mosser, you will need to drive (NOT RECOMMENDED), take BART (the subway) and an inexpensive cab, or split a cab the whole way ($$$). On Saturday the mighty tiki bus will make one stop to return people to the city. That stop will probably be the Mosser, unless no one stays there. Every other SF hotel will be an easy walk or cheap cab ride. HOWEVER....

We recommend you stay at Tiki Central's Preferred Crawl Hotel of Choice: The Four Points in Emeryville. Here's why:

1. Walking distance to Trader Vic's!! (3/4 mile, or a very cheap cab)

2. Central East Bay location makes Friday night a breeze.

3. The mighty tiki bus will pick up and drop off on Saturday at the Four Points. This will be the only East Bay stop for the tiki bus, so the folks that live in the east bay can park and ride from there.

4. We have reserved a block of 20 rooms there. Call the main reservation number to book your room. We have a special rate of $89 per night. Ask for the "Tiki Weekend" group when you call.

That's why I passed up a free night at the Hyatt (on Saturday)and just booked the Four Points for the bus drop off. Booked the Hyatt for Thur. and Fri..

You'll be able to visit Unga Bunga there on Monday.

Although I am VERY new to this forum, I do live in the SF east bay. I was stoked to see this event happening so close to where I live! Any room available to include a newbie? I would love to join the crawl either Friday nite or Saturday depending on my work schedule!

Tiki Fire, just post here that you want Martiki to include you on the bus....and you're in. But you're in even if you don't. Though it will be harder to drive and park on your own.

Ok, I made me reservations for the Four Points by Sheraton San Francisco Bay Bridge, as noted to do in Martiki's post.

FYI:
~The block of rooms for the $89 rate is only for Friday, April 2nd and Saturday, April 3rd, with checkout on Sunday. If you are planning on going to the "pre-party" at Martiki's on Thursday, April 1st, then the room rate of $89 is not applicable. The room rate for that Thursday night is $139.00 (regular room rate). Something to keep in mind.

~If you make reservations directly through The Four Points by Sheraton website, there is an "internet" rate of $79 per night, including Thursday, April 1st. The difference in pricing is the size of the bed. The "Tiki Weekend" price of $89 is for 1 king-size or 2 double beds, where the $79 "internet" rate is for 1 double bed only.

In both cases rooms are limited. Still a good price no matter which way or which combination you go with, especially if you are sharing a room.

For me personally, I'd rather pay the extra ten bucks for a king-size bed, so I went with the $89 "Tiki Weekend" special. Also, as of this writing, Monkeyman, PolynesianPop, ChikiTiki and myself will be driving up on Friday and unfortunately have to miss the Thursday night activities.

P.S. Before someone tries to interject a joke, "no, I am not sharing my king-size bed; I am staying in my own room!" :lol:

This particular cemetery has amazing views of San Francisco Bay and was designed by noted landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead. There's tons of Victorian-era statuary (bring your cameras!)

Hey SCD - When is the LA Crawlmobile leaving LA?

I'm looking forward to this! Great Saturday plan with the bus picking up in the East Bay (so I don't have to catch BART home by midnight) and ending up at Vise's Bamboo Bar (we probably won't have such a hard time getting in as at Bamboo Hut). Many thanks to Martin for planning this!

Cindy, perhaps on the way to or from the cemetery tour you could drive by the original site of Trader Vic's and Zombie Village in North Oakland, and maybe the Tropic Sands Apartments in Alameda (with a Witco (?) tiki gaurding the entry - the only public tiki in the East Bay and the only apartment tiki in the Bay Area). Just a couple ideas for visitors.

correction of my previous post: the tiki at the Tropic Sands is the only public tiki in the East Bay besides those at Trader Vic's. Whew! I'm glad nobody caught that glaring error in my post!
