Has anybody heard Eden Ahbez's first album "The Singing Prophet"? Or the album he contributed to, Bob Romeo and his Jungle Sextet "Aphro-Disia"? How do these compare to the great "Eden's Island" LP on Del-Fi? |

"The Singing Prophet" is a great album. Unfortunately, only 100 promo copies were pressed, as Herb Jeffries told me that the woman who owned Olympic Records folded the company just before the album was to be released. It feautres the only version of the four-part "Nature Boy Suite," plus one other Ahbez song on side-two. The remiaining four songs are non-Ahbez. The three songs that Eden wrote on "Aphrodesia" by Bob Romeo are amazing. "Lisbon Street Dance" was later recycled for a 1958 Ahbez single (with lyrics in '58) titled "Wedding on Monacco." The whole Romeo LP is mesmerizing, but I think "Sahara" by Ahbez stands out as the mysterious masterpiece of the whole affair. |
