The Bottom Line R.I.P.

The legendary Bottom Line nightclub here in New York City has been finally forced to close it's doors thanks to the fine money grubbing folks over at New York University. Yet another case of the mentality of our society: money first, art and culture second. Or should I say art and culture last. I'll admit I have only been to a handful of shows at the Bottom Line, and they may have not always catered to my personal tastes in music, but I felt incredibly sad tonight when I rode my bike past the venue and noticed that it was stripped of it's trademark awning, and the marquee was blank. I knew that efforts were made to try to save the place, but I was unaware that it had closed just a week ago.

The Bottom Line opened in 1974 and was just shy of it's 30th anniversary which was coming up in February. The club launched the careers of, and showcased many of the most notable names in the music biz. I was fortunate enough to see Alicia Keys in her premier performance there, as well as a performance there by Ringo Starr last March. You probably remember Ringo from that british band from the 60s call 'The Beatles'. I also saw bluegrass legend Doc Watson perform there as well as a few others.

So there you go. Another element of American rock 'n roll gone to rock venue heaven.
