Bellydancing, Hula...

Pages: 1 16 replies

appears at least in our east coast neck of the woods, bellydancing is the hot new aerobic activity.

at my relatively hip gym, the activity room adjacent to the exercising equipment room routinely has classes. women arrive in at minimum a multi-bangled scarf about the hips; some arrive in full regalia ~ i'm sure several hundred dollars worth of wardrobe.

i personally find it quite intriguing! i guess a notch up would be hula, but who knows what the future holds...

At out local YMCA, they do offer Hula!
It's cool to see a class that both young and old are encouraged to attend and the aerobic activity is overshadowed by a beautiful dance and tradition.

Belly dancing, eh? Are you going to take a class? :)

i think i'll pass in the interest of the public health ~ both mental and physical :)

I don't know about doin it, but I sure like watchin it.

A Tiki Cheers To You

Those was a GREAT little video, Unga Bunga! Funny how a couple of those girls had some belly dancing moves in there as well (at least, I'm not aware of belly rolling moves being part of hula, although they both definitely have the rapid hip-tossing thing going!).

i can't seem to see those clips, but there is one move in traditional Hawaiian Hula called an "umi" where you roll your hips around very much like a belly dancer would...

hula v 2.0 can be upgraded by downloading the following security patch :)

i had a very odd bellydancing experience this past summer at the maryland renaissance festival... a large group of kilt-wearing highland musicians were playing traditional celtic music at one of the inns, and a woman jumped up and started bellydancing to it. it actually worked pretty well.

just sharing the imagery... j$

Bellydancing is so big in scotland for ladies of cetain age that there are even shops catering wholley in bellydancing costumes.

My wife was tought the Kiribati form of "hula" dancing as a child, and i'm allway on at her to sart up classes so she can make money as a alernative form of bellydancing.

When Marian and I were in Delaware a week or so ago, her brother took us to a Moroccan restaurant called "Casablanca". It was on US 1 in New Castle outside of Wilmington. Everyone sat on couches and ate with their hands from common plates. They served six or seven courses and when the meal was over the belly dancing began. It was a really nice evening and not too expensive. My only complaint is I found myself wanting to smoke some hashish in the worst way, but they never offered to bring a hookah to the table.

Being an on-and-off bellydance student, there is much to be appreciated in the similarities of the two forms. At least on a technical level. That was certainly the opinion of my bellydance friends that I took to the Hukilau hurricane extravaganza at the Mai Kai.

Both enphasize incredible isolation of movement. Certainly a full body workout.

Not to highjack a tread, can anyone recommend any hula instructional videos/DVDs so this fledgling bellydancer can expand to another dance form?

My wife was taught kiribati hula dancing as a child, and i keep telling her because belly-dancing is such a popular past time in the UK, that she should start up classess, but she refuses to do it due to the fact it would comercialise another ancient culture.

You're wife's opinion is valid. I can see that. Its the risk we take in putting something we love out in a capitalist world.

I don't what its like over in Edinburgh.
I've been lucky to be around a core of people who love and support bellydance. Its more like an expanded community. Sometime more like a jealous dysfunctional extended family that's catty, but not capitalized. Yeah, it shows up in a few high profile places, but its helped than hurt the bellydance community down here.

My LA Fitness offers a similar class.

Vegas Vic has a Let's Bellydance collection

Yah, he's got some seriously classic artists on that compilation. I'm quite a fan of Eddie Kochak and George Abdo. They really don't make music like that anymore.

A few of my bellydance friends say this old style music distinctly tells you where you are, like a tap on the head. Really easy to count.
