"Johnny Staccato" on TRIO Network

For those who get the Trio station on their cable lineup, they are running this rare, classic PI show starring John Cassavettes as part of their "Brilliant But Cancelled" series. "Staccato" ran for only one season (circa '59) but that's no fault of its own, as it is an incredibly atmospheric, ultra cool time capsule using many real Manhattan locations that reek with period color. Previously it has only been available on extremely hard to find bootleg videos, third generation at best, though I have seen 16mm prints pop up at local rep bijous like the Roxie in SF. On the 1/2 hour show, Cassavettes plays a hardboiled beatnik musician/detective who works out of a jazz joint called Waldo's. The crime jazz soundtrack (which I own on LP) is absolutely killer. They already showed a teaser run the first two weeks in March but the series returns on Monday April 5 at 8:30 Eastern. Catch it if you can, it is just plain awesome. Another reason for us lounge lizards/pulp lovers to shell out for digital cable, along with the reruns of "Hawaiian Eye" "77 Sunset Strip" and "Surfside 6" on GoodLife every Tuesday night.
