Restaurant historian Philip Vaughn has issued what he calls a curtain call for the Kahiki Mystery Girls. He hopes to post some of their photos on his web site, columbus-chefs.com.

The Mystery Girl was costumed in South Seas garb and served only one menu item during the 39 year run of the Kahiki. It was the Mystery Drink, an enough-for-a-crowd concoction of 150-proof rum with tropical fruits over ice cubes. The tab high in the '60's was 4.95.
"There must be hundreds out there," Vaughn said of the Mystery Girls. One of the original co-owners of the Polynesian landmark, Bill Sapp, said the number is probably closer to 100. "We had about six each of the first few years," he said of the place that opened in 1961. In its later years, after Michael Tsao bought the restaurant, the number fell to one Mystery Girl, who worked evenings only.

Former Mystery Girls may contact Vaughn through his web site or by phone, 614-864-7870.
