Poly Pop, King Ku's corny lyrics for Quiet Village are from the Don Ho vocal version, one of my favourites, so bad it's good. I first heard them when the Beachbum and I were at the Kona Kai in Chicago in '96, the house band's Sonny Kuni crooned them for us after we requested the song... I am a big fan of "Lounge" cover version compilations, there are not enough out there! This was only topped by Munich Klang Museum curator Kalle Laar, who released THREE CDs with 25 versions of the classic "La Paloma" on each, another fave of mine. There are many other Exotica classics that would warrant cover version compilations, I could easily see 20 versions of "Jungle Drums","Adventures In Paradise" (Soundtrack of the TV series), "Misirlou","Baia" and others. C'mon all you CD burning cracks, start collecting. PS: Some of the above mentioned Exotica classics I just found on a nice double CD re-release by British Pianist Stanley Black, "Exotic Percussion" and "Intimate Percussion", out from Vocalion in England. |
