Marian and I talked to Joe as we were leaving and apparently just before this happened. He was already upset because he had been treated very rudely by some jackass that tried to take his bar stool, and then wanted to fight about it.
After he went outside they wanted to charge him a cover, then this shit happens. How awful...
The art and decor in this bar is great. On Thursday when King Kukulele played it was fairly quiet and a core of us -- including Joe, Pablus, Flounder and some friends and wahines -- enjoyed our time. Friday night was much different.
I think the problem with this bar is that it is in a location which is going to draw a young, fired-up crowd on the weekends no matter how bad the drinks are, whatever crappy music they play, or whoever the assholes are that manage it. The decor just doesn't matter, unfortunately.
Wai-tiki was absoltuely jammed to the rafters last night by people who could have given a rat's tail about tiki, the art or the tropical drinks. Plus, you know its out-of-control when the area starts swarming with cops and security guards.
I know some of us complain that the scene at Trader Vics and some other places is too mellow, mostly business types sipping beers and watching television... in my opinion that kind of environment is preferable to a mob of rowdy 21-year-old kids.
Overall, I have to say we want to go there on Oct. 22nd when the Vodkanauts are supposed to play, but that will be to support Tweedtone and his mates. Otherwise, we'll stay away until Joe gets a formal apology from management and a reserved table with a security escort anytime he wants to show up.
