I've just realized that many of the things around me are either rather ingenious in design or function, or too dull to qualify as adequate.

Keys.

No more than the minimum neccessary on a key chain. That's the most adequate thing.
And peanut butter. Now, if I could just get my keys out of the peanut butter...
