The color organ plugs into the stereo by the speaker output cables - there is a piece of speaker wire soldered into the unit that serves as the input jack...you just connect with a couple wire nuts and the thing is ready to activate the lights.

I have no idea how the thing works put it supposedly has three separate transistors that activate the circuits from the electrical impulses of high, mid-range and low frequencies. What I did was record the audio of thunder and the jungle on one channel (the right channel) and it is heard through the regular stereo speakers. The other channel (the left) is nothing but the exact thunder noises on the audio track occurring a second or two before they are heard - since this is plugged directly into the color organ it activates the lights but isn't audible. Both channels of audio were burned onto a CD and are played from an off-brand shelf-top stereo system that I bought at the Goodwill for $8.00.
