We wife included a bottle of aged Appleton Estate in my Easter basket (Gawd I love that woman)... my question is this:

Please do not lambast me for my ignorance, but Appleton is listed as a DARK rum. To me, it's a medium (based entirely on color). If you were to make a Mai Tai formula (like The Hawaiian Village version) that called for: light, med & dark rum... what would Appleton be considered?

Thanks for your help in my quest.

hey machtiki, i think the rums thread did explore some of these differences ~ i'm pretty sure appletons estate is an 'old' rum - 5 years old at least and a gold rather than dark rum. i think the appletons dark rum is 'appletons extra.' i'm pretty sure the color is related to the age- how much it evaporates in the barrel and how much it derives color from the charred insides of the barrel.

i say go for what tastes best to you. i've been using appletons estate (5 years) and cruzan estate dark (2 or 5 year) for the house mai tai, and haven't been disappointed.
