Care and feeding of my tiki. Advice desperately needed - Tiki Carving

I have never done anything to the tiki since it always looked in fine shape. Tonight however, I noticed a small (1.5") hole in the top. I put my finger in and the center of the hole just crumbled away. So, I began tapping my tiki and it sounds suspiciously hollow to me. Used to be a solid 300lb monster. Now, I'm not so sure. Anyone ever heard of this? Is there hope at preservation? Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.
