Police said Harvey appeared to have fallen from the driver's seat of the car and investigations were underway into exactly what had happened.

"The man was alone in the car at the time," the spokesman said. "No other drivers were involved."

East 17 had a string of hits in the 1990s, including a Christmas number one with "Stay," but split when Harvey was fired from the band after he admitted taking drugs.
