Well, burrs are really useful, but they aren't used for carving per se, but more for shaping. I've tried all kinds of power tools, but nothing beats a variety of sharp chisels when it comes to removing wood accurately.

What I was getting at is that you can use even flat chisels to get your depth and all your rough cutting in, but don't worry about getting a perfect look with the chisels, because you can always go back over all the rough chisel cuts later with a burr and smooth it all out. Then you're ready to sand.

I wish I could show you. I just gave Spermy a primer on burrs & stuff this afternoon. I learned the hard way. My first wood tiki was carved almost entirely with a Dremel and palm chisels. I tried to get everything perfect with the little chisels before I started sanding. It came out pretty good, but with a lot of wasted effort. With the right tools, you can cut down on some of the work.

I'm aways amazed at how many different methods are used to get to the same result. So, think about it & if it sounds like a good way to go try it.

I always enjoy watching progress posts. Thanks for the pix!
