Swanky, You are gaining experience every day and that is what you call progress. I suggest that you continue this post with photos and questions because that is how you will receive the valuable feedback you need.
You must consider that your tikis are just "practice pieces" until you really know what you are doing and the pieces turn out just as you planned. That's what I do because I know I am a hack but I enjoy carving my tikis and I am the one who created them so I am the one who says when they are "done". I have just finished my 5th one and I know I am learning new tricks and how to better use my tools with each new tiki. Just get some better chisels and keep being open minded and trying new things. On each sucessive carving you can try a different type and/or size of tiki and develop your style without getting into a rut of making the same kind over and over. When you are not carving because of bad weather or too much tingling in your arms, get to your computer and read more and more of the carving posts. You know there is a ton of great advice and cool photos in there! Most of all, Stay with it and one day you will be coaching the new carvers who are braving their first born tikis. And for those of you who would like to try carving but haven't done so yet, what are you waiting for? Get the logs and tools and go for it. Soon your yard will be full of your own tiki tribe which you created. Thats a cool yard I want to hang out in! 8FT
