Historic Yellow Pages under apartments, then just start reading for exotic names. They pretty much jump out at you after a while.

Historic city directories are an even better source. Most directories have a section in the front of the book that lists all multi-family/apartment complexes with the directory boundaries for the year of the survey. You can usually find historic city directories at the main branch of the local city library, just ask the reference librarian.
