Actually, they are a pretty authentic rendition of what the Maori mokomai (dried ancestor heads) mouths look like, sort of skull teeth in a human face, compare BOT page 178.

I believe that this is where the typical teeth in Polynesian Pop Tikis hail from, compare BOT P. 186, and the Traders menu BOT p. 90
