I have also heard a larger version of the freestanding metal fireplace referred to as a "Swedish fireplace."

We sold a 2 part red metal one at a garage sale a couple of years back. It was previously purchased at a garage sale and used happily for many years until we moved into our existing home where there was no more room :( because we have a real brick fireplace :)

anyway - just be careful - there are 2 grades - one for electric fake fires and more expensive ones for real fires - very different animal and it's dangerous to confuse the 2!
