Paint, especially on a badly uneven piece of wood, is a true friend. It can hide knots and make cracks look 50 years old....A little black or Java brown can even out a splotchy finish if applied lightly. And it can change the character of a piece from okay to near perfect finishwise with the wave of a hand.
