Hey Jab, sorry for late reply,
The people that work at the Surfing Museum don't get paid. They do it
out of love of surfing and the culture.
I volunteer there on Sun's in the Summer when Surf bands play in the parking lot. By settign up chairs and sun shades for people to sit under. Cleaning the parking lot. Helping the band set up if they need. and getting them waters and food sometimes. The Bands don't get paid either. It's all donations of time to the Surf Museum.
You'd think if Huntington Beach really wanted to be known as:
"Surf City" and Not Santa Cruz. They would shell out some decent money to have a nice Museum and pay the staff.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

I was very disappointed that the Museum of Surfing in Huntington Beach was closed when I stopped by on the 17th. (before we headed over to Ben's shop, which is partly why we got there so late). The sign on the door said "closed due to lack of staff". Lame!
