I'd say take the subway to Battery Park/Whitehall, take the Ferry from Whitehall to St. George & take the S44/S94 Bus to the KMart Shopping Center. It'll take you a long time to get there & back that way, but it's cheaper than taxis. I grew up on Staten Island and rode the busses & subways everywhere, in fact I didn't learn how to drive 'til I was in my 20s & living in LA, and I don't think I've ever taken a NYC cab in my life.

JT, Where in Manhattan? Where in Brooklyn? I'd say take the subway to Battery Park/Whitehall, take the Ferry from Whitehall to St. George & take the S44/S94 Bus to the KMart Shopping Center.
