Hi, I’m in Liverpool in the UK and have been into Tiki for a while now. It can be a bit of a Tiki desert in the UK, particularly in the north, but somehow that makes it more miraculous when you do find Tiki related items in this part of the world. I guess I got into Tiki through exotica music. Around the mid-nineties I remember reading about Les Baxter and Martin Denny in the “Incredibly Strange Music” books. I loved those books; they opened up a whole new world. When I heard that music it was like a revelation, I just “got” it straight away. While reading about exotica I was seeing “Tiki” mentioned often, being from the UK I had no idea what this was, but it sounded interesting. Gradually the mysteries of the Tiki world opened up before me and I eventually visited my first Tiki bars on a trip to San Francisco in 1999. That was it - my fate was sealed, I would be forever in awe of the power of Tiki. So, the Wahine and I have been gradually putting our own Tiki room together; is there really anything better than being surrounded by bamboo, mai-tai in hand, listening to the soothing sounds of exotica? Anyway, I’ve been lurking around here for a while, enjoying the forums, and thought it was about time I joined in and made a contribution. Mahalo, |
