Haven't figured out employment yet on the non-Oahu islands but for living, real Estate and rents keep on rising, dramatically. However, the non-Oahu islands allow for a more legitimate island feel.

On Maui, a 2 bedroom, 800 squ ft (a galley kitchen, living room and 2 bedrooms - no den nor dining room) is $ 1765 at Sunset Villas.

Re Condos, 2/1 near the airport (not the water) is $245K

2/1 near the water, $318

The Big Island appears to be exclusively vacation rentals, although there must be a few apts somewhere for the hotel employees. However, the locals live on the Hilo side and drive 2 hrs each way.

One option, live & work on Oahu and weekend on the other islands, if there is extra $$.
Also, one will need a roommate, maybe a U of H student.
