Just my two cents but in case you hadn't thought about it, start out playing with two mallets first, then when you've mastered that and have a good repertoire of songs under your...well, your mallets, gradually get into playing with four.

Some other artists with excellent vibes players to look out/listen for are George Shearing and Earl Bostic. Listen to the marimba solo on Starbuck's 'Moonlight Feels Right', as well. That solo always floors me.
