I think the confusion here is over the semantics, as Sven pointed out. Is the question "When did someone first serve a drink in a mug shaped like a tiki?" or "When did someone first serve a drink in a tropical-themed novelty mug?" Tropical-themed novelty mugs like bamboo or coconuts or wahine sculptures are generally referred to as "Tiki mugs" by many folks, both in and out of the know...

Now that wasn't so cranky, was it?
