That's funny you say that as I'm a drummer by trade. I guess I need other percussion players in there too, as I just play very acurately with my own overdubed tracks. I actually only quantized the bass track, and gave it a random offset of 10 ticks (computer slop). The real bass track will probably help loosten it up a bit more. I have to agree with you though, the quantize button can ruin an otherwise great tune. I also try to use multi layer sample banks that respond to velocity i.e 3 to 5 samples per key. That helps out alot. I still want to replace those vibes in a bad way. There is nothing like the sound of a good set of vibes with an acomplished player behind them!
The best part about writing those parts on the computer is I can print out sheet music for the other players I get in here. What instrumentation do you use with the Tikiyaki Orchestra project? I love the guitar in there. Not a typical instrument in most Exotica I've heard, but you make it work very well.
