Sometimes selling them isn't an (immediate) option.

Approach the person as if s/he is a friend of yours who made an honest mistake. No judgment (very important!), just be plain and genuinely ask her/him to return the mug.

I've had to do this several times (only once has it gotten ugly - "The Jody Incident"), and as long as you don't go in all accusitory(sp), people are really okay with it.
