I once made a joke to a Hawaiian coworker about throwing people into volcanoes and he was so offended that after not speaking to me for a couple of days, he said "Billy, that was a long time ago and my people didn't know any better. Can't see how that's funny". I don't know if all Islanders are that sensitive, but I'm not taking any chances. I have the utmost respect for those people and their culture and I plan on letting it show.
