In good conditions (warm and dry) I let each coat of stain dry for several days. I make sure there is no excess stain that will get sticky. I generally do three coats of the stain, or until I am happy with the color. Then, I wait at least a week or more before I apply the stain - sometimes a month. If it is cold and damp where you are, drying times will be a lot longer. Sorry to hear you've got a mess on your hands. That sux.
