This difference in attitude here is also a result of cultural conditioning: In America, one grows up with the creed "If you don't have anything NICE to say, don't say anything at all!", while the German (and thus my) motto would be more like "If you don't have anything PRODUCTIVE to say, don't say anything at all".

I am not judging that here, both have their pros and cons, "NICE" can be very productive...it was just a thought that crossed my mind.
