With respect to the number of the edition I'd echo Bullet's observation regarding the relative quality of the earlier casts. The other aspect I look at is the variations in the glaze work from piece to piece. If given the opportunity to select among the available pieces in an edition I'd take a higher numbered piece over #1 if I find the overall effect of cast and glaze more appealing.
