Hey guys thanks for ya support & feedback.

The birdhouse IS more for form than function though, HAKALUGI. I agree with your points, as I do own a manual on building birhouses & it covers all styles, even those for a more ornamental purpose. TIKI TRAV is correct, no racoons here, though my dog has been known to put "bird" on his menu! So with this in mind & the fact it is only a little over a metre off of the ground, I made my son well aware that the birdies probably won't be movin in too soon. As TIKI TRAV pointed out, I do have bushland all around me and a couple of years back placed a proper nesting box way up high in a gum tree for the native birds (no perch,landings or overhangs, just a box with a hole). So we still have the enjoyment of watching them nest, just over the fence!
