Yay! Summer is drawing closer here in Oz! What a great day... 27 degrees (that's celcius, around 80F, I thinks)
I literally just snapped these pics in my yard of a Moari style bird house, my son Liam (6yrs) and I built recently.

The project was really cheap. The wood was free offcuts from a local supplier and the thatch is scraps from a fence I made a while back. The Moari tikis are fiberglass, so they are perfect for outdoors...I found one at a garage sale several years ago & Liam happened to find an identical one at the local markets, for a buck!, a few weeks back. The post is a nice piece of bamboo from the local hardware, only $5...I grabbed a few more for future projects!

Anyway hope you like it...a great little project for those with kids (or those without too!)

ps. PK Rippers rule!

It looks great but the perch and ledge (and overhanging beam) are bad form for a safe bird house.

Check out these guidelines, specifically the end of part 4.

I don't think there is much chance of a racoon attack in Australia unless someone leaves the gate open at the Zoo....
Plus it would be no less safe than any wild nest or perch as Tez lives directly on a large strip of bushland.. I say safety is for the...errrr....birds.

The perch concern in the article was predatory birds.

Function before form.

Hey guys thanks for ya support & feedback.

The birdhouse IS more for form than function though, HAKALUGI. I agree with your points, as I do own a manual on building birhouses & it covers all styles, even those for a more ornamental purpose. TIKI TRAV is correct, no racoons here, though my dog has been known to put "bird" on his menu! So with this in mind & the fact it is only a little over a metre off of the ground, I made my son well aware that the birdies probably won't be movin in too soon. As TIKI TRAV pointed out, I do have bushland all around me and a couple of years back placed a proper nesting box way up high in a gum tree for the native birds (no perch, landings or overhangs, just a box with a hole). So we still have the enjoyment of watching them nest, just over the fence!

BTW HAKALUGI, checked the link ya gave me & it looked very helpful, cheers.....TEZ.

That's very cool! Appropriate that it has a "bird mouth" A-frame beam too :) I wonder if the more timid birds will be scared by the tikis, they do look somewhat owl-like

Cheers TIKI TRES,
The eyes are about the only authentic/traditional part of these tikis...they are pieces of Abalone Shell and in the right moonlight they glow and kinda do look like a pair of small owls...(or a big spider!!!)
