The Kon Tiki project as a whole was an attempt to support a hypothesis by re-creating the voyage from South America to Polynesia, using the kind of watercraft and route that could have been used by South Americans. This suggested that Polynesia could have been populated in this way. So, you could say the film documents this re-creation.

You might also say the Kon Tiki crew was engaging in both re-creation AND recreation. Just a quick look at Bengt Danielsson's Love In the South Seas, and you get a sense of what that other kind of recreation might be.
