I really like those "Blood Island" movies, even though they're nasty violent and yucky and seem like they were made my mutant maniacs. I saw a couple of them on TV in the mid-70's, a good time to see them really, and they were cut for television of course, but a lot of fun. The Chlorophyll Monster is a real original, and the island settings do provide serious atmosphere--lots of jungles and real waterfalls. And those films, according to Eddie Romero, were made for practically nothing, so the inventiveness level is very high. I now consider Eddie Romero to be the "other" intellectual filmmaking Romero. He wrote very thinky scripts for his horror films, and this is something I definitely appreciate. "Beast of the Yellow Night" is almost TOO thinky! |
