I just spoke with Tara O'Leary from Trader Vic's HQ, she is thrilled to be on board with this effort! I put her in touch with my friend Carolyn Jones of the SF Chronicle, who is preparing a story on this (I'll post the link when it's printed.)

This is all coming together in perfect sync: see Tara's official press release below, which I just forwarded to Carolyn for the story. Here's to Vic and here's to Oakland. Aloha!

Trader Vic’s, Inc. Celebrates 75th Year in Business
50 Locations Worldwide in 23 Countries

San Rafael, CA (BusinessWire) April, 2009 - Trader Vic’s, Inc. is very proud to announce their 75th Anniversary. Trader Vic’s, Inc. brands include Trader Vic’s Restaurants, Mai Tai Lounge and Senor Pico, these successful concepts are expanding to more than 50 locations in 23 different countries across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
According to President & CEO David Carter, “Only a handful of restaurant companies has lasted three-quarters of a century. Trader Vic’s prospered over the decades and from its humble beginnings in California has grown into a highly successful worldwide organization.”
Trader Vic’s, Inc. announced last month a partnership with Harlequin Hotels & Resorts and Harlequin will proudly showcase all three Trader Vic’s concepts at each of its resorts throughout the Caribbean. Trader Vic’s is contracted for future openings in Egypt, Ireland, Ukraine and Azerbaijan and this spring is opening Trader Vic’s at LA Live in Los Angeles, CA.
It all started in 1934 when Victor Bergeron first opened Hinky Dinks saloon in Oakland, California. “Trader Vic” was an ambitious and savvy businessman who had a flair for creating fancy fare and fancier cocktails, including the world famous Mai Tai, which is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year. "Trader Vic" understood that the end of prohibition would mean a surging demand for watering holes to where people could escape; that idea and the lure of an exotic respite from everyday life, is as relevant today as it has ever been. The authentic décor, the exotic drinks, the savory food and friendly service lay the foundation for the Polynesian fantasy that is Trader Vic’s.
As Trader Vic’s celebrates the past 75 strong and successful years, it looks forward to an exciting future of new partnerships, new locations and most of all, providing fun and relaxation to all who seek an escape from the outside world.
