Just got this email from Andre Jones, chief of staff for Oakland chief council person Rebecca Kaplan: Hi Team: Here is a quick update to everyone. We are attempting to have the Mai Tai agendized for the final Council meeting before summer recess. We have submitted the item to the Rules Committee for scheduling with the intent of having the Resolution making the Mai Tai the official cocktail implemented at the July 28th City Council meeting. JULY 28, 2009: barring any "unforeseen incident," as Seinfeld would say, Oakland finally and officially secures its rightful place in Polynesian Pop History; reinvents and reinforces its own public image, hopefully changing it from an allegedly crime-ridden urban disaster area into a multi-cultural, multi-faceted vacation destination loaded with cool stuff and colorful people, as it should be perceived; and Vic Bergeron gets his due civic recognition for creating the signature "tiki cocktail" in Oakland CA, as fate would have it, 65 years ago this August - perfect timing!
