I watched some footage tonight about the Kahiki. Now a Walgreens. The Zombie Village was a vacant lot for decades. The original Trader Vics still is a vacant lot. Trader Vics BH next on the demo block(?) Now the Tonga.
When is this madness going to stop?! What's up with this insane obsession to tear down these treasures and replace them with what?

Coming from LA, I can easily say there is too much development and for over a decade I lived in a complex that is on the National Registry of Historic Places. However, some development is good, like Trader Vics @ LA Live with its twin Tiki outside as 24hr sentinels, just like the Moai on Easter Island, or formerly the Tikis in front of the former Royal Hawaiian in Laguna Beach.

Moreover, we don't live in caves or wigwams, so each of us live on land that at one time was undeveloped.

In The property owner of the Fairmont stands to make not just a lot of money, but 10s of millions as there is so little development property avail in SF, particularly an ultra desireable area like on California. If anyone had a 401K, pension or investment portfolio which included the ownership of that land, we would want our money managers to take advantage of a similar investment opportunity.

The Kahiki is a different story as the owners decided to move on to a frozen food business. I still mourn the loss of Tahiti on 3rd St. in LA which had a fireplace inspired by the Kahiki.

Lets just make sure we all join the LA Conservancy and similar groups to fund people like Chris Nichols to try and preserve what can be.
