It seems like a desperate attempt of Hawaiian pop culture trying to be "with it" in the late 60s, and not being relegated to the old folks culture, i.e. Hapa Haole and Exotica. As the article states, Hawaiian performer Kui Lee managed to bridge the generation gap, but after his premature death, they were searching for someone like him, and didn't really succeed. Hawaiian pop either remained local, or tourist oriented.
