This story seems analogous to that of Korla Pandit in some ways (though their personal characters appear worlds apart):

mentions "the then-current vogue for 'exotic customs'," and it appears that he snookered Time Magazine in 1930 (link on Wikipedia page), which notes that "he wears civilized clothes (on occasions, and for effect, a fez, a flowing gown)..."
