My girl got me one of those ION USB turntables a couple years ago and I use it all the time for thrift store LP finds.

I use the http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ download software and it does fine by me.

I also do the record washing thing when I find new stuff I want to record.
Using warm water and a couple drops of Dawn dish soap and a soft brislte paint brush to gently clean the grooves, rinse well with warm water, Pat dry on a clean bath towel, Air dry between paper towels.
(Found this method on a auidophile site, I had some LP's that had gotten wet and had mildew on the grooves and was looking to find a way to clean them.)

It's amazing how good some stuff will sound that looks like sandpaper was taken to after a good washing.
