If you leave the pump on 24/7 it will stay clean. Its the stagnation that makes it icky. Leaving the pump on will require you to add water more often unless you have a toilet bowl float thing.

I have a fountain inthe backyard with a float filler. The filler is in a large white plastic paint bucket and piped over to the fountain. I have the bucket hiding behind a bush about 20 feet away from the fountain. The water level in the bucket is the same level as the fountain.

Without the auto filler it was running dry in 3 days.

BTW the pump will probably last longer if you leave it running. Ive had the pump running for 4 years solid now and still going strong/
